The panel presentation will focus on how service providers can promote existing parenting resources to teen parents. This will include a breakdown of program outlines and what aspects can spark teen interest. The panel presentation will review 3 different community based programs and the options specific to the needs and interests of teen parents.

We will explore the positive effect that a pregnancy can have on even the most vulnerable youth and the ways that service providers can be of the most assistance during this time of change.

If you are concerned about your anger or, if you have experienced any of these losses as a result of your anger, this group might be of interest to you. The group teaches concrete skills of anger management and relaxation in order to recognize and deal with this powerful emotion, as well as communication skills for the constructive expression of
frustration, anger and other feelings.

This is a group for women who are committed to developing
self‐awareness and self‐regulation in connection with anger.
Topics to be explored include defining anger and its origins,
exploring underlying emotions, recognizing and defining
situations that trigger anger, creating coping strategies and
developing assertive communication skills.

This is a group designed to assist men in discovering more fully their gifts of fatherhood and manhood. This program is not only to help men become good fathers, it is also to help them become responsible fathers.

A group designed to assist us in identifying the “benefits” and consequences of holding onto anger. This program enables us to both complete this past and create a life of our choosing.

The theme for this year's National Family Week, Families Connecting through Stories, is a wonderful way for families to spend time together.

Andrew presented an overview of the Neah Kee Papa Program ("I Am Your Father"). This program is a parenting enhancement program designed to support the well being of children and to encourage and promote the parenting role of fathers. “This is Me” is a software CD that shows animated scenarios of the strengths and challenges of individuals with FASD and ideas for strategies that can help them function better. It comes with a learning guide booklet. It can be used in a variety of applications, such as self-study, one on one with an individual who has FASD, small-group facilitation and large group presentations.

Susan Rabinovitz has worked extensively in the field of adolescent health, particularly with young people in high-risk environments. During her 25 years at the Division of Adolescent Medicine, Susan has provided direct education and counselling to youth, developed innovative models of care and prevention, provided training in adolescent development and adolescent-specific services, and evaluated program effectiveness.

This past February, more than 130 APIN members gathered to view and discuss one part of the PBS series Inside the Teenage Brain. The video featured a number of neuroscientists who have studied the maturation of the teenage brain. Research has shown that during times of adolescence, important brain growth and change continues beyond the early stages of life. This is the period in time in which impor¬tant neural pathways are becoming organized. The teenage brain is in constant flux, sending constant spurts and creating important connections for appropriate brain development. This is also a period where the brain is most vulnerable to risks such as schizophrenia, drug and substance abuse addictions.

The Child and Family All Nations Coordinatoed Response Network (ANCR) is the newly-formed centralized intake unit. Come hear about the process once a referral has been received as well as information on the programs operating out of ANCR.

The 3rd annual APIN Adolescent Parents Day combined physical activity, music and learning. Along with an active Kids in motion session, the day included an engaging presentation on attachment and raising emotionally healthy children by Csilla Przibislawsky, a therapist at Aulneau Renewal Centre. These special interactive days for adolescent parents are free of charge for adolescent parents and the service providers who accompany them. Babies are welcome as the day’s activities are planned to engage both mom and baby. (Note that child care is not provided. Please be sure to bring whatever your baby might need, such as food, diapers, floor blanket and toys.) Lunch and snacks are provided for the adolescent parents and the service providers.

During this two-hour luncheon, participants learned about vicarious trauma, what it means, and the impact is has on the lives of service providers.

Participants learned about the Adolescent and Child Collaborative Community Intervention Service (ACCCIS) for adolescents and their families experiencing significant difficulty as a result of psychological trauma, as well as St. Boniface General Hospital’s services for Anxiety and Tourette’s.

This year’s APIN conference for service providers focused on adolescent mental health and wellness. Session topics included: adolescent brain development, self-harm, alcohol and drug issues, post partum emotional adjustments, eating disorders and body image, post-traumatic stress disorder, and solution-focused work with families and children.

The results of WRHA’s Teen Mom’s Survey were presented, in which participants were asked about their experience with public health services and what they thought might help to meet the needs of ‘hard to reach’ young parents.

The Baby F.A.S.T. (Families and Schools Together) program brings 10-15 three-generation families together for eight weekly sessions of carefully crafted activities. It works to support young mothers in their roles as parents. Come hear about Baby F.A.S.T. at West Kildonan Collegiate and the valuable lessons learned.

Trina provided an overview of HCM programs with a focus on the healthy adolescent development portfolio and the creation and implementation of school-based teen clinics.

Peace Begins at Home, a project of the North End Women’s Centre, will talk about parenting techniques that help prevent children from becoming crime-involved, and how to best support and help youth if they do become crime-involved. Please bring your bag lunch; coffee and tea will be provided.

The second annual APIN Adolescents Parents Day will offer hands-on activities including crafts, music and more. This half-day workshop will provide a chance for teens to look at media messages including sexism in advertising and violence in media along with how to talk to their kids about violence and how to deal overall with these issues.

Join us at this full day conference for service providers to increase your understanding of youth and gangs from a variety of perspectives, with a focus on women.

Learn about the activities of the Violence Is Not Child’s Play Coalition and Project Peacemakers. The presentation will focus on Raising Peaceful Kids In A Violent World events and efforts to regulate video game sales and rentals to children and youth. The Coalition recently sponsored a forum that looked at how violence affects brain development of children and youth, alternatives to violence as entertainment, and how to create more peaceful homes and communities. This presentation will be held at Partners for Careers, a one-stop shop for information on employment, education and training opportunities for Aboriginal people in Manitoba.

Attachment is the deep and enduring connection between child and caregiver that is established in the first several years of life. The quality of the attachment relationship profoundly influences the emotional, cognitive and social development of the child. This noon-hour presentation will cover: key components of healthy attachment and simple tips for teen parents to help foster healthy attachment. Come out on Valentine’s Day to learn more about healthy attachments!

This presentation provided details on the various financial supports available to pregnant and parenting adolescents, including who is eligible and how to apply. Programs to be discussed included:
